What my career has taught me…

Beep Beep Beep

There it goes off again, my alarm to start another long and tiring day. Just 5 more minutes I say to myself. Those 5 more minutes at 6 o'clock in the morning becomes 15, 20, 25 til my phone shows the time 6:40 am and then I really have no other choice other than getting up and rushing to get ready.

These past few months have been a blur, a time I really wish I could erase from my existence. The past few months have been overwhelming, a whirlwind of stress and self-doubt. I found myself in a situation where I constantly had to prove myself and it made me feel so small, so unwanted, so insignificant. There were eyes on me ...... all the time....

Yet, through all the chaos, one thing gave me the motivation to get up every morning—my students. The one thing that really got me going and starting my day, with little to no time to get ready and make a cup of coffee before leaving the house at 6:55 was..... the kids.

Teaching has been an incredible journey, full of lessons that go beyond just academics. As I reflect on my career, I realise how much I’ve learned about life, connection, and growth.

I teach at a school in the Liverpool area, where some children suffer tremendously at home and school is their safe space ...... I am their safe space. Teaching to me is more than watching students learn, it is to see them grow, develop and build a strong relationship with them. A strong enough relationship so that they are able to confide in me no matter what they are going through or what class they are in. I aim to be the person they can come to for whatever the reason is, whether it is something at home or at school.

The Magic of Relationships

Building strong relationships with my students has been the foundation of my teaching practice. Getting to know their individual interests, struggles, and strengths helps create a supportive environment where they feel safe to take risks and explore their learning. I’ve come to realise that these personal connections make all the difference in their academic and emotional growth.

But, it wasn’t easy to get here. In the beginning, I struggled—feeling overwhelmed by the diverse needs in my classroom. At times, it felt like I wasn’t doing enough. Yet, through trial and error, I discovered that connecting on a human level was the key. Taking time to listen and empathise opened doors I hadn’t imagined. Now, my classroom is a space where students trust me and are willing to take chances with their learning because they know I’m there to support them.

Embracing Flexibility

Teaching is anything but predictable. Over time, I’ve learned that no two days are ever the same. While I used to feel disheartened when lessons didn’t go as planned, I now see these moments as opportunities for growth. Being flexible has allowed me to better meet my students’ ever-changing needs, whether it’s adapting a lesson plan last minute or responding to an unexpected question.

By letting go of rigid plans and embracing the flow of the day, I’ve managed to create a dynamic classroom where learning stays alive and engaging. I’ve learned that it’s okay when things don’t go perfectly—it’s how we adapt that matters.

Lifelong Learning

Teaching has shown me that learning is a lifelong adventure. One of the biggest lessons teaching has taught me is that learning never truly stops. At times, when I struggled to engage certain students or felt stuck in my teaching, I turned to new ideas, workshops, or peer advice. Constantly seeking out ways to improve has made me a better educator, and my excitement about learning new techniques has also inspired my students. When they see my passion for learning, it ignites their own curiosity and drives them to explore their interests. Learning, I now understand, is a shared journey.

The Power of Empathy

Every student carries their own story—sometimes, it’s more complex than I can imagine. Early on, I found it difficult to balance teaching with being attuned to their personal lives. I often struggled with how to address emotional needs while keeping up with academic goals. Over time, though, I’ve learned the importance of practicing empathy. By listening and showing compassion, I can better understand my students’ unique situations and challenges. This has allowed me to offer more meaningful support, both academically and emotionally. Teaching is about more than imparting knowledge—it’s about seeing the whole child and responding to their needs.

Creating a Positive Environment

The atmosphere in my classroom has become a central focus of my teaching. Through my struggles, I’ve come to realise that creating a positive, welcoming environment isn’t just about being cheerful. It’s about celebrating small successes, encouraging collaboration, and making sure every student feels they belong. In a classroom where everyone is recognised and supported, students are more motivated to learn. I’ve learned that even the smallest act of kindness or recognition can make a huge difference in a student’s attitude towards learning.

The Gift of Patience

Teaching can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also tough. There were times when I felt like I wasn’t making progress—when students didn’t grasp the material or behaviours didn’t improve as quickly as I had hoped and I was extremely overstimulated. In those moments, patience has become my most valuable asset. I’ve learned to embrace the slow pace of growth and appreciate the small wins. Every challenge brings a new lesson, not just for my students but for me as well. I’ve come to see patience as an opportunity to practice persistence and empathy...

The Ripple Effect of Education

One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching has been witnessing the long-term impact of my efforts. Watching students grow, overcome their challenges, and reach new heights has reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education. I’ve learned that even the smallest interaction—a conversation, a word of encouragement—can have lasting effects on a child’s journey. Education isn’t just about the present moment; it’s about planting seeds for the future.

Conclusion

My career has taught me resilience and the power of human connection. As a teacher, I’ve learned that building meaningful relationships with students goes beyond the classroom—it creates a foundation of trust and safety that encourages growth. Flexibility is essential, as each day brings new challenges, teaching me to adapt and embrace change. Patience has become a key virtue, allowing me to support my students through their ups and downs, while empathy has deepened my understanding of their individual experiences. Ultimately, education has shown me the ripple effect of making a lasting impact on young lives.

My journey as a teacher has been anything but easy, but the lessons I’ve learned along the way have shaped me into the educator I am today. I’ve struggled, felt uncertain, and had moments where I questioned my path. Yet, through perseverance, empathy, and continuous learning, I’ve come to realise that teaching is about so much more than just academics—it’s about fostering growth, building relationships, and creating a lasting impact. I’m grateful for the journey and look forward to many more adventures in the classroom.

Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding.
